I am 35. I have seen one of my best friend’s mom and a colleague undergo treatments for Breast Cancer and beat it! It was an incredibly arduous journey they went on, but they fought breast cancer and came out on the winning side. This brings me to why I mentioned I am 35. I am almost at the age where I am going to be getting my yearly mammograms to make sure I am healthy. My mom at 35 went for a routine mammogram to find out she had a non- cancerous tumor. However, if she didn’t make the appointment with the doctor, who knows where and how healthy she would be today! Early dedication is key in the fight against Breast Cancer!
One in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. That is a daunting statistic! That is equivalent to an inner circle of girlfriends or the women in an extended family. While breast cancer rates are lower among non-Caucasian women, death rates are higher among African American and Latina women. In fact, every hour and a half a Latina woman dies of breast cancer in the United States. Shocking it is…But we need to do something about this!

Two friends of mine have been diagnosed with (and beat!) breast cancer. Both of them were young, too. One was 28 and the other 41 when they were diagnosed. Scary!!
No, Breast Cancer has not touched me personally as of yet, I do get regular checkups.

I don’t know anyone who has had breast cancer. Almost all of the older (than me) ladies on my mom’s side have had to have biopsies, but luckily everything has been benign. It is scary, though.

My paternal grandmother died of breast cancer when my dad was 19 or 20. I never met her. This has helped me to be more vigilant. I got my first mammogram at 38.
Just about every woman in my family has had it or at least a scare that it may be. The women who have had all have had to have a mastectomy! I have been getting mamograms since I was in my 30’s

My aunt and great aunt have dealt with Breast Cancer during my lifetime. My great uncle had Breast Cancer prior to my birth. My grandmother ended up having a double mastectomy due to the number of lumpectomies she had back in the 70’s. Due to where medical technology was then versus now, we suspect that she too had Breast Cancer, but it just wasn’t able to be properly diagnosed.
Yes, I do my monthly self-exams and have already had a baseline mammogram. I am more aware due to the level of activity of this cancer in my family. That being said, I was fairly concerned prior to my aunt and great aunt being diagnosed.
