Tis’ the holiday season and with the holiday seasons comes lots of fun road trips to visit families and friends. We just finished a 6 hour road trip to New Jersey to visit my parents and plan to repeat this trip again in May. While traveling can be fun, it could also be very stressful. We have 2 children- 22 months and 4, so travel can be even more cumbersome. One of the major facets of traveling with small children is to make sure you plan enough time in your travel time. I realized this more than ever over the last few months when I never factored in all the bathroom trips and diaper changes that needed to be made. A 6 hour trip quickly became a 9 hour trip in no time at all.
I thought I share some important tips for preparation when you are making all of those holiday road trips this holiday and winter season, especially with traveling with children.
1. Make sure you more than ample snacks and drinks. When traveling with small children, they are always hungry. If you don’t bring the necessities of snacks and drinks, you will be stopping more times on the road than you like to. Believe me on this one… I have been there!
2. Make sure you have a portable DVD player, kids gaming system, or built in DVD player. While the 22 month old is still backward facing, the 4 year old likes to watch movies and play her games. She keeps herself plenty occupied with watching one or two movies on these long road trips.
3. GPS…GPS…GPS!!! When you have children and are traveling, you want to get there as soon as you possibly can. One thing you don’t want to do it get lost! Believe me, this will eat up your traveling time and you will end up getting yourself in a tissy. Cars like the Kia have a built in GPS to make getting from point A to point B easy.
4. Pack plenty of activities for your children. I always have a container that I fill with crayons, paper, stickers, and pencils. My daughter loves doodling with her crayon books and it is a good activity to do while they get bored watching movies. I keep the activity box in the car with us at all times.
5. Have a First Aid Kit in the car at all times. You might not think you will need it, and hopefully you won’t, but it is nice to know it is there in the event that you will need it. We have pulled out Band-Aids from our car First Aid kit many times in our traveling journeys.
