Ways to Reduce Nasal Congestion

*This is a partnered post to learn about Nasal Congestion.*

It is inevitable that everybody has to deal with nasal congestion at some point in their lives, but some seem to be plagued with a stuffy nose so frequently, it has become a routine to attempt to live with it. It is not normal to be congested too frequently and this can drastically affect the quality of life, so it is important to reduce the congestion whenever possible.

Ways to Reduce Nasal Congestion

Treat the Source

A stuffy nose can occur from distorted anatomy, but it can also occur because of swelling in the nose. One of the most common reasons for a stuffy nose is a reaction to allergens or irritants that are in the air. These irritants cause the lining of the nose to swell leading t nasal congestion. It is important to take stock of your environment and evaluate any sources of irritation. These include trees and grasses in bloom, as well as simple house dust, or a dirty work environment. Once the source is identified, simple solutions are often available.

An infection – usually viral – can also lead to swelling of the nasal and sinus tissues. Most think that their congestion is caused by the buildup of mucus, but in fact, it is more about swelling in the nasal tissues than anything. When an infection is present, usually it will improve with simple remedies; however, if it persists, you should consult a physician.

Navigate the Temperature and Weather

The weather and outdoor temperature can affect many parts of your life, but did you know that the temperature can impact how well you breathe from your nose? Your congestion could be caused by vasomotor rhinitis, a condition that produces allergy-like symptoms such as congestion and sneezing, but it is a non-allergic problem.

Triggers of the rhinitis include factors such as the quality of air nearby, smoke or even something as simple as a weather or barometric pressure change. If you’ve noticed that you’re often stuffed up during a certain type of weather condition, it is important to take note of this symptom and inform a doctor of this. You could have the diagnosis you need to begin treating your condition properly.

Stop Using Over-the-Counter Nasal Sprays

Nasal sprays are advertised as a way to help deal with congestion. Many companies present their product as something that will open the airways, providing better breathing patterns and bringing you instant relief from whatever ails your nose. Unfortunately, one product doesn’t fit all when it comes to congestion and using nasal sprays can actually make your congestion worse. In fact, many over-the-counter nasal sprays can be harmful and cause damage to the nasal lining when taken on a long-term basis.

Fortunately there are many good treatments for nasal congestion. But the key to effective treatment is proper diagnosis of the source of the congestion. If nasal congestion seems to be a regular ailment for you, it’s time to get some help ending it once and for all. To learn more about what is causing this problem, seek the assistance of Dr. Samuel S. Becker, an ENT specialist located in Pennsylvania. After the proper diagnosis is made, you can take the important steps to dramatically improve your quality of life.
