Potty Training Woes

Today was a totally awesome, amazing day in our household because our first born, Hayley, almost 3, went poopy in the potty. To some this might not seem like a big deal but once I tell you her story you will understand.

Hayley was pee trained at 2 years, 4 months without ever having so much as a accident. She was a rockstar and gladly took to peeing in the potty after a few stickers. She refused to go number 2 in the potty. We tried everything in our right mind in terms of bribery-stickers, candy, stamps, new toys, movies, /etc. You name it we did it. We also bought her a small potty based on suggestions but she didn’t want anything to do with that either.  She would go to bed and then go poop in her diaper overnight. I was okay with this until one day she decided that she is so deathly afraid of pooping in the potty, that she was not going to go.

We dealt with 2 agonizing months of her being utterly constipated. She held it in for days at a time that we ended up having to give my poor baby a few enemas in a span of weeks. We changed her diet. Nothing seemed to help. We tried explaining to her that it was okay to go and would put her diaper back on her. Nothing! It was a constant cycle of her being so conspitated that she would scream to us all hours of the night,”mommy, please make me feel better.”  It was heart wrenching. The enemas helped but once a few days passed we were back to square one. I finally decided that we needed to take her to the doctor so maybe he could help out. He recommended starting her on a laxative powder in her drinks and going back to diapers. So we followed him. Same cycle though happened with the laxatives. Once we tried to wean her off, she was back to constant pain. So, I decided to totally drop any talk of the potty and bring her to the doctor for him to talk to her several times a week about the issue(mini therapy like sessions with her pediatrician). Something needed to be done!

Well today, 2 weeks after our first doctor appoitment, she screamed to me, “Mommy, I went pooping in the potty.”  She then proceeded to tell me that she was no longer afraid of going poopy in the potty. I gave her the biggest hug in the world and rewarded her with a special toy I had saved for the occassion. I am so elated and still have happy tears from such a joyous event! Funny what things make you happy when you are a mom!

OMG!! Now your freaking me out with the pooping issue. I guess one step at a time. I know that pooping is a big thing for little kids learning. It also seems like there has been a switch flipped and now Aiden wants to go. I hope Rebecca will be easier. Hayley better hold onto that Mickey or someone might go home with it. 😉

Yay!! Congrats to Hayley and Mommy! We have just started the potty training process, slowly, with our 1 1/2 year old. So far she just wants to sit on the potty but hasn't actually gone in it. I have no expectations and am just glad she is interested in what it is! So happy for you, I can feel the relief in your post.
