Operation Mincemeat, a new musical from Broadway, just launched their Broadway tour and the first stop is the Providence Performing Arts Center. I had a chance to see this musical two nights ago and it was PURE FUN! It is a fast paced, high energy musical comedy based on a true story from World War II. It follows a small team of British military intelligence operative that comes up with an outlandish plan to trick the Nazis before the Allied Invasion of Sicily.
The best part is there is only FIVE actors (no essemble) playing a total of 80 characters. When I watched this I was not only in awe of their talent but the fact that they got into such different characters, so readily. It features such slapstick humor, cross dressing, and clever satire that has the audience roaring with laughter throughout the 2 hour, 35 minute show.
I thought the cast was so talented, and there were definitely a few performances that really stood out to me especially those of Montagu (played by Katie Kleiger) and Hester Leggat (played by Luke Antony Neville). The music was fun and really catchy, and I found myself enjoying the songs more and more as the show went on. I also thought the story was really interesting, especially because it’s based on something that actually happened during WWII. I liked how the show was able to take a pretty serious historical story and make it funny and entertaining without losing the heart of it.
Overall, I’d say I liked Operation Mincemeat a lot. It’s definitely a unique show with incredible talent! Go out and support this show now playing at the Providence Performing Arts Center. For ticket info, click here: Operation Mincemeat.
