Foot & Knee Pain: Understanding Arch Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Foot and knee pain are common problems that can affect people of all ages and activity levels. I recently had knee surgery so I know how debilitating this could be!  Because the feet provide the foundation for the entire body, problems with the feet can sometimes contribute to discomfort higher up the legs, including the knees. Tne common source of foot discomfort is arch pain. If you have ever had this, it truly hurts! The arch helps absorb shock and supports the body’s weight with every step. Pain in this area may develop from prolonged, overuse, standing, increased physical activity, improper footwear, or changes in the way a person walks. Some people may notice discomfort after exercise, while others may experience pain during everyday activities. For me, I had a lot of pain!

Plantar fasciitis is another frequent cause of heel and arch pain. The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and helps support the arch. When this tissue becomes irritated, it can cause pain, particularly around the heel. A common symptom is discomfort with the first steps after getting out of bed or after sitting for an extended period. Some people have pain when just simply walking and others have pain, just by simply sitting. It is very uncomfortable pain!

Foot problems can also affect the way a person walks or distributes weight. Changes in walking patterns may place additional stress on the ankles, legs, and knees. As a result, addressing foot discomfort may be an important part of managing lower-extremity pain.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include activity modification, stretching, insoles, supportive footwear, good clothing, strengthening exercises, physical therapy, or other treatments recommended by a healthcare professional. Persistent, worsening, or severe pain should be evaluated to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

Taking care of your feet and paying attention to early signs of discomfort can help support healthy movement and make everyday activities more comfortable. Feet pain is not something you should have to deal with! Make sure you take care of it today!
