The Housemaid Movie Review! Opens Today!

This past week I had the pleasure to visit Boston to attend the screening of the movie, The Housemaid, based on the book of the same title.  The Housemaid is a book in a triology set by Freida McFadden. While I did not read the book series, I did bring a friend who read all three and told me the book was quite true to the movie, with the exception of a few characters that had a bigger role in the book.

Synopsis of The Housemaid:

THE HOUSEMAID is a wildly entertaining thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, based on the best-selling book. From director Paul Feig, the film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.
Genre: Thriller
Rating: R for strong/bloody violent content, sexual assault, sexual content, nudity and language

My Thoughts:

As mentioned above, I went into this movie not really knowing anything about this plot as I had not read this book before. I am a huge fan of the thriller genre so I was excited to see a movie that would entail great plot, character development, and surprise. To me, this was a thoroughly enjoyable thriller from start to end.  I did feel like the start lagged a bit but honestly to tell this story properly you needed to set the stage and character involvement. The Housemaid

The story starts out when Nina Winchester (played by Amanda Seyfriend) interviews Millie Calloway (played by Sydney Sweeney). Millie really needs a job due to being on parole and trying to get her life together. She goes to live in this huge mansion and meets Nina’s husband, Andrew (played by Brandon Sklenar) who is this handsome, doting husband or we think.  Just as you think this story is going to go one way, it goes in the complete other direction. I had no idea about the twists and turns in this movie, and I think The Housemaid did a great job of leading us on one , just to take it back and go the other way! I loved this about the movie.

While this is a thriller, I loved the audience reactions to some of the scenes filled with laughter, despite the craziness of the thriller train we were on. I thought Amanda Seyfriend and Brandon Sklenar were standouts in this movie. As said before, some parts in the beginning did drag but the second half most certainly made up for it.

Scream, laugh, cry and more! This is one movie I would see in the theaters simply for the jump scares you have with the audience.

I give The Housemaid 7.5/10 stars!

THE HOUSEMAID OPENS NATIONWIDE TODAY DECEMBER 19th.
